New York Pharmacy Students Vaccinate Local Seniors

The American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) held the 3rd annual “Operation Immunization” in New York recently.  Students of Touro College of Pharmacy took part in the effort.

The event took place at the Gaylord White Senior Center in East Harlem and ten Touro College students participated.  They assessed elderly community members to determine if they qualified for certain necessary vaccines.

We are very committed to contributing our expertise in preventative medicine within the Harlem community and are proud of the contributions our students make to this significant public health initiative.
~ Dr. Zvi Loewy, Interim Dean of Touro College of Pharmacy

Because the students are not able to administer the vaccines, they observed the process with licensed pharmacists who were in attendance.

It’s vitality important for seniors to receive vaccinations because adults over 65 years of age are more susceptible to the flu and also prone to other preventable diseases as well.  As student pharmacists, it was our goal to administer as many immunizations as possible in order to do our part in protecting our senior population.
